Major Notes:
Andy Warhol, whose birth name was Andy Warhola, was an artist and filmmaker who became prominent for introducing the Pop Art culture to America.
He came from a working-class family with his father employed in a coal mining operation.
While still a youngster, Warhol was stricken with a disease known as St. Vita's Dance which left him bed-ridden much of the time.
He did find time resting in bed to practise drawing and start a picture collection of movie stars.
In 1945, Andy Warhol entered Carnegie Mellon University to study Commercial Art.
He moved to New York in 1949 and began to work in advertising and magazine illustrations.
Warhol expanded his field of work to include illustrations for promotions and album covers in the music field.
He experienced eye problems and sometimes wore special glasses and enhanced his appearance by dying his hair silver.
Soon he was hired by a shoe company to draw illustrations featuring their products.
Warhol knew the companies he was advertising depended on mass production, hence, he decided to try mass producing his own works of art.
He set up a company called The Factory and hired artists to duplicate silkscreen prints and posters.
The company was very successful and Andy Warhol was generally known as the best commercial artist in New York city.
In the early 60's, Warhol began making paintings of everyday objects such as soup cans, pop bottles, and many comic book stars.
In addition, he made numerous underground films and The Factory became a meeting place for all kinds of characters.
Warhol, in 1968, was shot and serious wounded by a deranged female who had been a regular at The Factory.
During the 70's, Warhol began making a series of Pop Art portraits of famous people such as Marilyn Munroe and Elvis Presley.
Now an established recognized artist and media icon, younger painters sought his advice and support.
Andy Warhol worked in nearly every field of the media world and in 1994 his home town, Pittsburgh, established the Andy Warhol Museum in his honor.
