Pat Tillman was a professional football player who chose to volunteer for military combat.
He was the oldest of three brothers and became a football star in high school.
Tillman helped lead his Leland High School team to a championship and was named co-Player of the Year.
Following high school graduation, Tillman was involved in a disturbance which led him to a juvenile home.
This incident in the end had a positive influence on Tillman's life.
In 1994, he decided to enter Arizona State University where he qualified for a football scholarship.
Tillman excelled in university both academically and on the football field.
The Arizona Cardinals drafted Tillman in 1998 as a safety defensive back.
Tillman proved to be a valuable addition to the team and in 2000 was named to Paul Zimmerman's NFL All-Pro team.
He turned down a $9 million dollar contract with another team out of loyalty for the Cardinals.
Following the 911 terrorist attack, Tillman turned down a $3.6 million contract with the Cardinals.
Instead, he and his brother who was a pro baseball player, both enlisted in the army.
After a successful training period, the men were assigned to serve in Iraq.
Tillman was later redeployed in the Afghanistan operation where he met an untimely death.
An investigation into his death revealed that the army had given out two stories regarding how Tillman died.
The final conclusion was that Tillman was a victim of friendly fire.
In his memory, the Pat Tillman Foundation was founded to recognize individuals who turn their lives around.
