Whitney Elizabeth Houston
Born:
August 9, 1963
Place of Birth:
Newark, New Jersey
Major Notes:
Whitney Houston was one of the most influential singers in pop music in the 80's and 90's.
She was by birth and friendship connected to several gospel inspired singers including Dionne Warwick and Aretha Franklin.
Her mother was a gospel/rhythm and blues singer who introduced her young daughter to the local Baptist church choir.
At 11 years old, Houston was accepted as a soloist in the junior choir and, in her teen years, accompanied her mother in concerts.
Soon she was not only backing up some popular recording artists but also appearing as a teen model on such magazines as
Seventeen
.
By the time Houston was 18, she had undertaken singing, dancing, and acting lessons in preparation for a professional career.
Houston signed a recording contract with Arista Records through Clive Davis, a friend of the family.
Her first album, entitled
Whitney Houston
, produced several pop hit songs and set a record in sales for a debut album by a female artist.
Houston continued with a series of record albums that produced more successful hit songs winning her major accolades.
By 1992, Houston decided to venture into an acting career and her first film
The Bodyguard
, co-starring Kevin Costner, was a huge box office success.
The same year, however, she entered into a life-changing marriage with the R & B singing star, Bobby Brown.
Houston's movies continued to make profits and she became the highest paid African American in films.
In addition, the sound tracks from Houston movies proved very successful further establishing her reputation as a superstar.
Several incidents over 2000-2005 cast a negative shadow over Houston's popularity.
Houston was late for or completely missed performances, showed signs of weight loss, was connected to drugs, and exhibited erratic behavior.
In 2005, Houston entered rehabilitation and the following year divorced Brown to "begin" her career over again.
She also signed a $100 million agreement with Arista to record six new albums.
Houston has received many honors and awards in the music industry including several Grammy awards.
As a standard for others to compare, Whitney Houston has sold over 170 million records and videos.
