Major Notes:
David Hackworth, although often critical of the military, was one of America's most decorated officers.
At the age of 14 Hackworth entered into the US Merchant Marine near the end of World War II.
A year later, lying about his age, he was accepted into the US Army.
Hackworth was assigned to the TRUST unit which at times was under British command.
He developed a respect for the values of hard training and perfection.
Hackworth served numerous tours in Korea and Vietnam earning promotion to officer ranks.
In 1971, Hackworth openly expressed his military concerns which were critical of the US actions in Vietnam.
This was not viewed favorably by President Nixon and other US Army officers.
The resulting criticism of David Hackworth is said to have influenced his early retirement from the military.
However, Hackworth had other problems that nearly led to his being court-martialed.
He was allowed to retire and moved to Australia where he became a very successful businessman.
Hackworth moved back to United States in the mid-1980's and worked as a military journalist.
Throughout the 1990's Hackwork became a noted radio and TV commentator where he was an advocate for the common soldier.
In addition, he started a popular military web site called "Soldiers for the Truth."
David Hackworth earned over 90 military decorations including the special "Combat Infantryman Badge."
