Over his career, Morgan Freeman has become one of the most popular and respected actors in the business.
When still a youngster, his parents moved to Chicago seeking work in the factories.
Freeman was sent to live with his grandparents in Charleston, Mississippi.
It is reported he was only eight years old when he undertook his first acting role.
Freeman did not excel in his school studies but, by high school, became a solid participant in extra curricular activities.
He took particular interest in music and theater.
Although Morgan Freeman had an opportunity to accept an acting scholarship after graduation in 1955, he instead
decided to join the US Air Force.
Freeman served in the military for five years and then in the 60's lived in Los Angeles and New York.
In Los Angeles, he was able to receive free training in acting, dancing, and singing.
He worked in a touring company and did some off-Broadway acting in New York.
Freeman finally got a role on Broadway in an all-black version of Oh, Dolly!
By the 70's, he had gained television acting experience through roles in General Hospital and The Electric Company.
Over the 80's and 90's, Morgan Freeman was selected several times in Academy Award nominations.
After having given stellar performances in such films as Driving Miss Daisyand The Shawshank Redemption,
Freeman was becoming an actor in demand and worked in a variety of movies.
In 2005, he finally achieved an Academy Award as Best Supporting Actor for his performance in the film Million Dollar Baby.
In addition, Morgan Freeman's awards have included a Lifetime Achievement award and an honorary doctorate degree.
