Kelly Clarkson was the first ever winner of the popular singing talent show called "American Idol."
Apparently, when she was 13, a teacher at Pauline Hughes Middle School heard Clarkson singing in a school hallway.
Sensing talent, the teacher asked the youth to join the school choir.
Clarkson did join the choir and, in fact, developed her voice such that she became a member of the Texas All-State Choir.
After high school, Kelly Clarkson wanted to pursue a singing career and moved to Los Angeles, California.
She looked for employment and found a job as an extra in "Sabrina, the Teenage Witch".
Still wanting to become a singer, she answered a newspaper ad asking for female vocalists.
Clarkson was successful and found herself receiving help from a prominent song writer, Gerry Goffin.
Unfortunately Goffin became ill and, around the same time, the apartment Kelly Clarkson lived in burned down.
She then decided to return to Texas where she heard about the new American Idol singing contest.
There were to be about 10,000 contestants and the winner would be finally decided by the public making phone calls for their favorite.
Clarkson entered, and after some judging, found herself in the top 30 entrants.
In 2002, Kelly Clarkson went on to win the contest receiving 58% of the final votes and was awarded a million-dollar record contract with RCA.
One of the first songs she recorded, "A Moment Like This," set a Billboard record of jumping from 58th to first place.
Clarkson and the other contestants proved the worth of the American Idol format to find new singing talent.
Kelly Clarkson has gone beyond just singing and has successfully developed into a TV and movie personality.
