As a child, she sometimes watched her part Cherokee mother singing on stage or appearing in an occasional movie.
Cher's early life was not an easy one as her parents had divorced and she struggled in school.
Cher dropped out of high school so she could take acting lessons which her mother paid for.
In 1962, she met Sonny Bono who helped her find work as a backup singer for record producer Phil Spector.
Cher and Bono were married in 1964 and, after some minor failures as a solo singer, Bono suggested they team up.
In 1965, they released their first album which included a song called I Got You Babe, a huge hit, which became their signature song.
Through television exposure, the couple became very popular and successful; during the next few years the duo posted six top 10 hits.
With the introduction of new albums and TV appearances, Cher was being recognized as a solo artist with an added talent for fashion design.
