Major Notes:
Halle Berry is credited as the first African-American actress to win an Academy award.
She is, however, actually biracial being born to a white mother and a black father.
Berry's parents were divorced when she was only four and she was raised by her mother.
She was a leading student in high school being a newspaper editor, cheerleader, and prom queen.
At 17, she entered and won the Miss Teen Ohio contest and subsequently was runner-up at the Miss USA competition.
In 1986, she was also the first African-American to enter the Miss World pageant, not winning but finishing in the top five.
Following more modelling, she entered the Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland to study broadcast journalism.
Berry did not complete her course requirements but decided to use money made from modelling to persue an acting career.
Her first TV acting experience came in 1989 when she won a role in a weekly series called "Living Dolls."
Berry continued to gain substantial acting roles in movies and in 1994 played the sexy Sharon Stone in "The Flintstones."
In 2002, she was nominated for and won her best actress Oscar in the movie "Monster's Ball."
She also played the role of one of the "Bond girls" in "Die Another Day" and the title role in "Catwoman."
Halle Berry has proved her acting and entertainment ability surpasses her physical beauty.
